We took the Nozomi from Tokyo to Osaka. We had stayed in Shinjuku for 4 nights. Shinagawa was the nearest shinkansen (bullet train) station though, we went to Tokyo station. Latter was the starting station of all the Shinkansen. We did not want to stress ourselves with the timed schedule of the reserved seat ticket, less chance to find non-reserve seats had we boarded at Shinagawa station. We purchased our tickets at the JR office at Shinjuku station.
It was past lunch time, we bought to go bento and drinks before we went to the platform. We queued at the non-reserved car (cars 1, 2 and 3), fortunately we found good seats for four.
Nozomi is not covered by JR rail pass but the fastest train in Japan among the three shinkansen on the Tokaido/Sanyo line. Nozomi stops at fewer stations compare to Hikari and Kodomo (covered by JR rail pass) and could reach Shin-Osaka station from Tokyo station in 2 hours and 22 minute. From Tokyo to Osaka is approximately 515kms
Nozomi stops only at largest stations. Train stops from Tokyo to Shin-Osaka:
Shinagawa- Shin-Yokohama- Nagoya-Kyoto.
The train was speedy though, travel was smooth. Seats were comfy and with plenty of leg room. A bit bumpy and shaky when walking while on the move and when inside the toilet.
