After riding to the top of Mount Untersberg by the spacious cable cars, we drove to Berchtesgaden, Germany.
Untersberg is a split between the Bavaria in Germany and Salzburg in Austria. The mountain is stretched from Berchtesgaden to Salzburg.
It actually straddles the border between Berchtesgaden, Germany and Salzburg Austria.
Driving from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden was a scenic route with the majestic alps watching over us.
Check out the video.
Bertchtesgaden is accessible via Bus 840 from Salzburg Hauptbahnhof (Central) station
The name of Berchtesgaden has been well known because of its attachment to the infamous Nazi dictator of Germany. Adolf Hitler, used to spend his summer on the peak of the mountain known as Berghof at Obersalzberg. A house was built for him up there on his 50th birthday as a retreat and place to entertain friends and dignitaries. The Building was known in German as Kehlsteinhaus. After the war, the occuppying americans dubbed the building "The Eagle Nest". The Eagle Nest, once the headquarters of Hitler, is now converted into a restaurant. I have read they serve the best lobster up there.
We did not stay long in Berchtesgaden. It was very late. We would just like to see for ourselves the amazing alps and roadside views I have read before our trip. As much as we would liked to explore Berchtesgaden, it was not in our itinerary for this trip. We went back to Salzburg soon after we had reached Berchtesgaden.
The next day, 10 June 2013, we went around Salzburg. We were at Trick Fountains and Hellbrun Palace in the morning.
