Leaving Lido beach... going back to San Marco
Continued from Venetian Lagoon Cruise, Venice Canals, Burano, Lido Beach
The ferry ride back to main island was non stop, crossed a short stretch of the lagoon to the Bacino San Marco, Venice waterfrount above the Piazza San Marco.

San Giorgio Maggiore (Isola di S. Giorgio Maggiore) is one of the islands of Venice, Italy. Its bodies of water is adjacent to the Venetian Lagoon and surrounded by the Canale della Grazie, Canale della Giudecca and Saint Mark Basin. It forms part of the San Marco district.

The church on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore was also named San Giorgio Maggiore. It is a 16th century Benedictine church designed by Andrea Palladio completed in 1610.

Santa Maria della Salute (Saint Mary of Health) is a Roman Catholic Church at the Dorsoduro district of the city of Venice, Italy.
The church was built in the 17th century followed by a plague experienced by Venice in 1630. The building was designed in the baroque style by Baldassare Longhena and dedicated to Our Lady of Health (Salute)

Santa Maria dela Salute stands on Punta della Dogana at the Bacino di San Marco, between the Grand Canal and the Giudecca Canal. Thus, the church was visible when we were approaching San Marco.

It was like a Sunset cruise on Bacino San Marco by Vaporetto with the view of the San Marco Campanile and the Doge's Palace as we were approaching San Marco Pier.

Doge's Palace, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture, is one of the main landmarks of the city of Venice. It was formerly the residence of the Doge and the seat of Venetian government. Doge was an elected lord and chief of state during the medieval periods in many of the states/cities in Italy. At present, the palace is an historical art museum.

Riva degli Schiavoni is a promenade along the waterfrount on St Mark's basin. originally built in the ninth century.
Two columns carrying symbols of the two patron saints of Venice mark the Piazetta. Latter is a small plaza adjoining open space of the St Mark's square.

There are two buildings between Piazetta. Facing the St. Mark's campanille, on the right is the side wall of the Doge's Palace (shown on the preceding photo) and on the left is the Biblioteca (library) designed by Jacopo Sansovino and continued by Vincenzo Scamozzi. There are stalls at the end of the building, facing the water, occupied by cafes and shops.
Piazetta is marked by two large granite columns carrying the symbols of the two patron saints of Venice. One is Saint Theodore, patron of the city before St Mark, holding a spear with a crocodile. The other column (shown on the preceding photo) has a creature of winged lion which is the symbol of St. Mark. The columns believed to be erected in the 13th century.

Bridge of Sigh is an enclosed bridge, designed by Antonio Contino, which was built to connect the New Prison to the interrogation rooms in the Doge's Palace.

It was said, through the bridge, the prisoners would have the last view of Venice before imprisonment or execution and could give out a sigh of the beauty of the city. However, the days of interrogations and executions were over when the bridge was built. And with the stone grills covering the windows, hardly to view from inside the bridge.
