Day trip to Hakone with Hakone Free Pass / Family Travelogue16 March 2016 Part 3

The cheapest way to go around Hakone using all the means of transports - Hakone Free Pass. We bought our free pass at the Odakyu center in Shinjuku station.  You could also get there, reservation for Romance car seat.  The free pass covers most of the transports around Hakone and one time round trip fare from Shinjuku/Machida/Odawara to Hakone.

We just visited Hakone for a day. The Hakone Free pass we purchased amounting to 5,140yen )for adult)s was valid for 2 days.  We took the Romance car to Hakone Yumoto.  If you do not have the free pass, you have to pay the regular price from Shinjuku- 1,110yen plus Romance car limited express surcharge of 890yen.  We had the free pass, we paid only the surcharge of 890yen per passenger.

This was how we utilized the free pass for a day:

From Shinjuku to Hakone Yumoto -  Romance car   (85minutes)
From Hakone Yumoto to Motohakone-  Tozan Bus 2 (located accross Hakone Yumoto station) (35minutes)
From Motohakone to Togendaiko- Lake Ashii cruise (40minutes)
From Togendaiko to Ubako-  Ropeway (10 to 15 minutes)
From Ubako to Sounzan-  Tozan bus
From Sounzan station to Gora station -  cable car (10minutes)
From Gora station to Open Air Museum-  Tozan railway train (one stop to Chokoku-No-Mori Station.)
From Chokoku-No-Mori to Hakone Yumoto- Tozan railway (33 miutes)

to continue from our post, Getting around Japan: Hakone with Hakone FreePass Part 2

From Sounzan station we took the cable car to Gora station.  We had our lunch in Gora.  As usual, our favourite, Tempura tendon.  We went inside a shop also for some souvenirs.  We then took the Tozan railway train for a visit to the Hakone Open-Air Museum, one stop to Chokoku-No-Mori station.  We have a separate posts for our visit to Hakone Open-Air Museum.   Recently, Picasso's artworks joined the over 120 modern masterpieces in this 70,000sqm open  area.  Picasso's though are placed inside and photography is prohibited.
The museum closed at 5pm and we got back to Hakone Yumoto around 6pm.  Our Romance car reservation was 7pm.  We joined the queue to Customer Service and requested for an earlier schedule back to Shinjuku.  We were assisted by an English speaking staff.

We could see that symbol painted in white on the mountain around Hakone.  We wonder what was it. It looks like a pinyin character for "big".  Does that mean the biggest or highest mountain?
