Tempura / cooking anyhow

I am not really proud with the outcome, chefs may get mad at me.  Just cooking anyhow, enough to satisfy our cravings for our favourite Tempura tendon.  Not as crispy as served in the Japanese restaurant...not as presentable as it should be... tastes Tempura though and my youngest was happy.

Needs credit for taking time to remove the head and the shell of  the shrimps and the meticulously deveining.  Further, peeling off the very hard pumpkin and I sliced anyhow.

We just bought tempura mix at the NTUC, added cold water, egg yolk and added some ice. The flour in the batter must develop little gluten as possible to result to a light and crispy tempura.  Iced cold water develops gluten slower.  I used canola oil and a little olive oil for frying. the prawns . I tried not to crowd the pot so the temperature will not drop quickly

You would notice half of the tempura were a bit dark.  Why???  I should have removed the excess crumbs that got burned and made my oil darker. My batter got warmed and forgot to put more ice, the batter got a bit thick.

I should remember next time not to over mix  the batter, better to have some lumps.  Prawns must be towel dried before coating for a better output.  Apparently, needs more improvement.

Tempura Tendon sauce:

3 tbsps mirin
3 tbsps soy sauce
1 tbsp brown sugar
half cup of shrimp stock (i don't have dashi stock)

boil the mirin to get rid off the alcohol smell, add the soy sauce, followed by the shrimp stock.  let it boil then add the sugar.  Stir for a minute or two.

Optional:  Cook egg with chopped onions

In a bowl of rice, place the egg omelette over the rice, add the tempura and drizzle with the sauce. The next time I prepare this dish,  I would make sure it would look appetizing (even in the photo only).  I'll add green veggies such as lady fingers, brinjals and asparagus.

Getting around Japan: From Asahigaoka/Yamanaka to Shinjuku station / Family Travelogue 14 March 2016

Mt Fuji and its formed five lakes are within the border of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park.  The park covers 474sq mi also includes Hakone, the Izu Peninsula and the Izu Islands.

Lake Yamanaka is the largest in surface and highest in elevation among the five lakes formed from ancient eruption of Mt. Fuji.  Kawaguchiko is the most popular though.  Motosolu is seen at the 1000 yen bill.  Saiko, Shojiko and Motosoku have same surface elevation which confirms the three originally one lake and were just divided by another eruption.

Lake Yamanaka is popular of water recreational and on fine weather, you could have a very nice view of both Lake Yamanaka and Mt. Fuji at Hirano.

Unfortunately, on the day of our visit, our very first visit to the Yamanakako was snowy.   Apparently,  Mt Fuji was no where to be seen, hiding...covered by snow.

On a clear day, the best to capture Mt Fuji and Lake Yamanaka.  Latter was added to the World Heritage List in 2013 as part of the Fujisan Cultural Site.

Lake Yamanaka is popular for its water recreational.  Swan Lake cruise is one of the activities.

Freezing to death though, my daughter still took photos of the swans.

Lake Yamanaka is a home to a flock of swans, real swans.  These flirty swans follow you around and we were a bit worried to get pecked.  The largest lake is also known as Swan Lake.  Most of the boats cruisin' around the lake are in the shape of swans.

There was nothing to do, we were planning to wait for the bus that could take us back to Fujisan station or the Kawaguchiko station.  We went back to the 2nd flr of the building opposite the lake, Kaba Cafe,  We approached the ladies selling the transport tickets.  After they told us the time the bus to Kawaguchiko station comes, I purchased two tickets.  I felt a bit glad, we did not have to go back to the Fujisan station and did not have to take the Fujikyu train to Kawaguchiko station.  I was planning to reschedule our ticket back to Shinjuku station.  The schedule I purchased earlier was 8pm, had not snowfall we could go around Lake Kawaguchiko and had taken at least two of the crazy rides at Fuji Q highlands.

Then a Keio bus arrived.  I asked the cashier if it was to Shinjuku station.  I requested for the change schedule of my Keio ticket and added a few yens.  I did not bother to return my ticket to Kawaguchiko station amounting to 1400 yen (approx) I just purchased few minutes ago,  I was so happy we got a direct bus.  Unfortunately though, we were seated at the very last, next to the toilet, sigh!

I took photos of the craft dolls  next to the cashiers.  I never asked if they were for sale.

from Asahigaoka to Kawaguchiko sation

I took photos while on the way to Kawaguchiko station from Asahigaoka.  A few passengers were waiting at Kawaguchiko, no way for us to occupy the vacant seats.

More passengers were waiting at Fuji Q highlands and on the next 3 stops.

Arrived at the busiest station in Tokyo, Shinjuku.  We went to the Odakyu office and purchased Hakone FreePass for our Hakone trip on Thursday, 16Mar '16.  I was not able to take photo of our freepass,  I could show you the one we had in 2014.

The freepass ticket would be taken once back to Shinjuku from Hakone.  I would share more of the Hakone Freepass benefits at our Hakone trip blog.  You could check out also our Hakone trip in 2014.

We had an early dinner at the 8th floor of Keio Mall.  The Restaurant is called ***Japanese dishes, western dishes, Chinese food "preference dining-8 sun eight~"***.  I have a separate post for the Restaurants with photos of the food they serve and its prices.

Our favourite, Tempura tendon.  We had this dish for four times during this 2016 visit.  We had it first at Tempura Tendon Tenya, Akihabara station.  Second was this meal.  Third at Gora, Hakone and the 4th one was on the last day, at the Tempura TendonTenya, Ueno branch.  I would have a separate post for Tempura Tendon Tenya with the dishes served and its prices.
