Fremantle, Western Australia: Fishing Boat Harbour, Bathers beach, Shipwreck Museum, Fremantle Prison, Fremantle Markets/ Family Travelogue 18 November 2016

Fremantle is a port city in Western Australia, half an hour away from Perth City.  It was founded in 1829 when the ship HMS Challenger (British ship)  arrived near the mouth of Swan river.  Fremantle was named after the captain of the ship, Capt Fremantle.

Fremantle  was at first a free colony.  It was populated by English people who migrated by choice.   Parmelia, 36 meter vessel, was chartered by the English govt to carry the first settlers from England to Western Australia.  The voyage took four months.

Settlement in Fremantle was not good in the first 20 years, England decided to make Fremantle a penal colony despite the great concern of the current settlers then.  Convicts from New South Wales were transported to Fremantle  and in the later years, mixed with convicts from India.  The convicts were used as labour for the construction of buildings and public works.  The Fremantle Prison, a World Heritage site, was constructed using convict labour.  The convict era period started in 1849 and transportation of convicts ceased in 1868.  The Fremantle Prison was used for the local prisoners till 1991.

Highlights of our visit to Fremantle:

The Shipwreck Museum
Bathers beach
Fisherman Boat Harbour
Fishermans memorial
Fremantle Market
Fremantle Prison

From CBD Perth, we took the train to Fremantle via the Fremantle line.  Travel was 28 minutes. From Fremantle station, it would take 12 minutes on foot to the Fishing boat harbour.  We took the free CAT blue, Fishing boat harbour was on the 17th stop.

We checked the galleries outside the WA Shipwreck museum.  Thereafter, we continued walking to the Bathers beach.

Bathers beach is centrally located between the attractions in Fremantle:  Fishing boat harbour, the Esplanade Park, WA Shipwreck Museum...  It is perfect for swimming, unpatrolled though.  and full of boardwalks.  Our last stop was at the Fishing boat harbour.

Fremantle Fishing boat harbour offers variety of Seafood Restaurants each claims serve the best fish and chips. Burgers and steaks are also in the menu.  Most of the restaurants are overlooking the water. We were watching people moor big boats while enjoying our burger/fish & chips at Cicerello's and the seagulls were waiting for our left over.

Not to miss the 12 timber columns with the names of the 608 fishermen who started the fishing industry in Fremantle and the two life-size bronze sculptures of fishermen.  The art works are not just statues but more of interactive pieces- Fishermen out in small boats and catch whatever they could in the local waters, back with a basket of fish and sell it to the local market.

We went back to Fremantle on the 20Nov with my colleagues for a half day tour in Perth and Fremantle sponsored by our employer.  We visited the Fremantle Markets and took photos outside the Fremantle Prison.  Fremantle Markets is an indoor market selling food and local produced clothes, accessories and souveneirs opens only on Fridays,  from 9am to 8pm and Weekends, from 9am to 6pm.  Fremantle Prison was mentioned earlier on this post.
