Santorini Sunset Sailing, Greece/ Family Travelogue 05 June 2015

Santorini is one of the island in the Aegian archipelago.  It is also one of the  popular destinations around the world.  The city was used to be a round island.  During the earthquake 3600 years ago (1585BC), the underwater volcano erupted and formed a Caldera.   The island was called Santorini derived from the name  Saint Irene or Santa Irene, a Cathedral in Perissa.  Perissa is one of the villages in Santorini Island, Greece.

The sunsets at Santorini viewed from the Caldera is without a doubt  breathtakingly beautiful,    A spectacular scenery for photography: golden sun slowly sinking and later turns to  bloody colour till it  completely set.

For those who prefer to see the beautiful sunset in Mediterrenean without obstruction, sail inside the caldera.  We joined the Sunset Cruise Semi Private Sailing.  We had spent the five hours: feasting our eyes with the marvellous volcanic landscapes and geographical formations around the calders; did swim and snorkle in the middle of the Aegean Sea and have seen the famous landmarks such as the Indian head mountain, rock formations, Venetian lighthouse and the sulfurous waters at the Palia and Nea  Kameni,  the volcanoes in the island.  We were able to take a dip also in the natural hot springs of the volcano,  Palea Kameni

Sailing from Vlihada to the Red Beach
Sail started from Marina Vlihada to the strikingly beautiful red beach of the island which is situated in the historic village of Akrotiri

Red Beach, the famous volcano beach on the island, is located near the excavation site of  Akrotiri. Everything is red with unique landscape and picturesque red rock formations.  If you want to spend more hours in this beach, you can get here by car: 10 mins rough walk from the harbour of Akrotiri and a bit of hiking; or by boat from Kamari, Perissa and Akrotiri.

Due to unpredictable landslides in the area, it was officially declared unsuitable for visiting.  Staying in the beach is own responsibility. Apparently, the place is irresistible, unable to discourage visitors.

From there, we sail the famous volcanic hot springs.  There are two volcanoes in the caldera: Nea Kameni and the Palea Kameni.  Mommy and the youngest took a dip in to the sulfurous waters of Palea Kameni

Palea Kameni especially is a pole of attraction for tourists for its healing hot springs.  The yellow waters there contain a large amount of sulfur and are characterized for their therapeutic purposes. Today, Agios Nikolaos which is the small cove in Palea Kameni islet is a true health source.

The villages in Santorini are perched on the cliffs of caldera.  While we were sailing the caldera, we could villages of Santorini such as Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigil and Oia.  I think the village on the above photo is Oia as it was there we waited for the Sunset.

We continued sailing and stopped to where we could see from afar the village of Oia.
We had then the Greek delicacies board buffet  with Greek salads, beverages and wines from the local wineries before we set to relax and waited for the Sunset

The very best views of Santorini are seen from the Aegean sea.  We wish we could still go back to this very beautiful creation.

Our unforgettable sailing ended at around 8pm.

I'll be posting more of the photos taken inside the caldera and more of the Akrotiri history.
